There’s more to the Fourth than just blowing stuff up. In fact, you can spend your Independence Day morning on a 5K to fight cancer and other ailments at the Bula Walk & Roll. Before you get your walk on, don’t miss a meeting of the Utah Board of Regents that will look at student-loan funding in the next year, among other issues. You can also check up on the quality of that fresh summer air at a meeting of the Air Quality Board.

Utah State Board of Regents
Thursday, June 30

The cost of higher education gets higher every year. That’s why if you’re college-bound or saving for your children’s college future, you might want to learn more about the health of the state’s educational piggybank. This week, come get a progress report about the state’s student-loan operating budget and the Utah Educational Savings Plan trust budget for 2012.

Bula 5K Walk & Roll
Monday, July 4

This year, the first-annual Bula One Love Celebration at Liberty Park is hosting a fireworks display with live music and food (see Five Spot, p. 8). In the morning, you can put on your walking and running shoes for the event’s 5K to raise money to benefit the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Utah Spina Bifida, which raises money to research treatment options and solutions for spina bifida, one of the nation’s most common disabling birth defects.

Air Quality Board Meeting
Wednesday, July 6

Enjoy the fresh summer air while it lasts—in six months, winter inversions will return with a vengeance. In the meantime, why not educate yourself on state efforts to de-chunkify the air we breathe? Come to the meeting to hear an air-toxins report, give public comment on efficient-vehicle tax credits and learn about other important air-policy decisions.
