Emigration Market was a constant presence at the intersection of 1700 East and 1300 South from 1942 until it closed in 2010. Now, the store is back up and running in a new form—as Harmons Emigration Market.
The local chain is attempting to combine the stability, services and pricing the bigger grocers can provide with the unique charm of a small, community grocery store. Although the inside of the market has been completely remodeled, the store is still compacted onto a street corner, and the iconic red “Emigration Market” sign is still on the roof. In a nod to the decades-long history of the site, Harmons is also asking people to submit their favorite memories of the old Emigration Market at the Harmons Facebook page and Website.
As for Emigration Market in the present, Harmons is providing high-end services and products such as gelato made from scratch, artisan breads and cheeses, a full-service deli with chef-prepared foods, salad bar, coffee bar, indoor and outdoor patio seating and pet-watering stations outside the store. For those who enjoy a good porterhouse of T-bone, beef is being aged in the store, and you can have it cut right there, just as if you were in a luxury steakhouse. The market will also regularly host outdoor grillings or tastings from local Utah vendors.
The new version of Emigration Market means one can experience a full day of eating at the corner of 17th and 13th. Start at Eggs in the City (1675 E. 1300 South, 801-581-0809) for breakfast; go kitty-corner at lunchtime to Emigration Market to eat chef-prepared sandwiches, sushi or soups on the sunny patio; then cross the street in the evening for an Italian dinner at Sea Salt (1709 E. 1300 South, 801-349-1480).
