The heralded, harmonious Harlem Gospel Choir formed on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday—Jan. 15—in 1986. Now, on the day nationally celebrating the civil rights activist, the choir will raise the rafters at the 11th annual Gospelfest, filling Weber State with the music of hope and love.

The choir has shared its joy of faith throughout the world—and that’s no easy feat. With 65 members, ranging in age from 17 to 70, the logistics seem daunting. And they’ve had no shortage of celebrity gigs, from The Colbert Report to entertaining Pope John Paul II to singing alongside U2. They don’t let that go to their heads, though; they’re more concerned with getting into their audience’s hearts. By show’s end, if you’re not standing, swaying and clapping—undoubtedly feeling the soul-stirring sounds—then you’re probably not in attendance.

Harlem Gospel Choir @ Austad Auditormium, Val A. Brown Center, Weber State University, 3750 Harrison Blvd., Ogden, 801-626-7000, Jan. 17-18, 7:30 p.m., $5. HarlemGospelChoir.com
