The fanciful tale finds a modern-day musical-theater fan transported by his recording of a fictional vintage production to 1928 Broadway, where a play-within-the-play (also called The Drowsy Chaperone) is on the Great White Way. The affectionate, escapist celebration/sendup of Jazz Age musicals features plenty of imaginative sets and costumes, but some of the surprising fun may come simply from seeing how the performers manage to enter and exit the circular stage. Lifted into the air? Disappearing through trap doors? Entering through pieces of furniture? Enjoy both a charming musical and all the technical prowess behind staging it.
