From now until Dec. 22, take advantage of an opportunity to give while you get at a special coat drive to benefit homeless youth. Next week, check out some scary math as author and environmentalist Bill McKibben talks about changing the equation on climate change. Later, catch the final Salt Lake City Council meeting of the year, covering topics including streetlights, open space and historic preservation.

Volunteers of America Jacket Drive
Through Dec. 22
This holiday season, you can do some shopping and help out homeless youth in Utah at the same time by taking part in the Volunteers of America jacket drive at Fresh Boutique, where every new or gently used coat you drop off will get you 15 percent off any store item. Get some shopping done and get on the nice list at the same time by helping the VOA’s Homeless Youth Resource Center. Fresh Boutique, 870 E. 900 South, 801-532-3458, through Dec. 22, FreshPremiumGoods.com

Do the Math Tour
Monday, Dec. 3
Environmental activist Bill McKibben is considered by some to have written the original book on the global-warming crisis with his stirring 1989 work The End of Nature. After writing a dozen more books, McKibben is still rallying for climate-change reform. You can join him as he discusses the scary math of climate change at this forum that’s $5 for general admission or free for students who register at Math.350.org with promo code “student.” Olpin Union Building, 200 S. Central Campus Drive, University of Utah, 801-581-7506, Dec. 3, 7 p.m., Sustainability.Utah.edu

Salt Lake City Council
Tuesday, Dec. 4
The year is almost over, but it’s not too late for the council to cram in a bunch of issues for the public’s consideration before 2012 is out. A tentative agenda shows the council looking at a variety of issues, including possible streetlight funding changes, historic preservation guidelines and the possible acquisition of 15.85 acres of property for a park in the Rose Park neighborhood. Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State, 801-535-7600, Dec. 4, 7 p.m., SLCGov.com
