In June, the Geek Show Podcast celebrated its second anniversary—which, if you know anything about podcasting, is an accomplishment. The two-time winner of City Weekly’s Best of Utah provides a weekly take on all things geek, whether it be arguing over the quality of comic-book writers, venting about the latest cinematic reboot or reliving childhood memories.
But the panelists themselves are active in the community and essentially bring free entertainment to the masses. In addition to the new weekly pub-quiz challenge Thursday nights, on the last Sunday of the month, they take over Brewvies to present Geek Show Movie Night.
Hosted by film critic Jeff Vice and happy-go-lucky drunken bartender Shannon Barnson (along with whomever else on the show manages to drop by), the evening provides brew-fueled hilarity focused on two classic films. Originally started as a homage to Mystery Science Theater 3000, the event allowed fans to riff on their favorite films and has grown into a social gathering for fans simply to meet and enjoy themselves. Previous themed ventures have included the 1966 and 1989 Batman films as well as back-to-back sequels such as The Empire Strikes Back vs. Star Trek II. This month, they take us underwater with the classic thriller Jaws followed up by its 1978 parody, Piranha.
Along with the free double-feature are special drinks set to the evening’s theme, concocted and tested by the panel prior to showtime, along with beer specials provided by sponsor Uinta Brewing.
