The fall is beautiful in the desert, and it also happens to be when the Adopt-an- Elder nonprofit sends a convoy taking food and supplies to needy Navajo elders in northern Arizona. If a road trip is not to your liking, there is at some local weekend activism, including a walk for Middle East peace and a forum on independent journalism.
Adopt-a-Native-Elder Food Runs

The Navajo Nation of northern Arizona is home to many elders who maintain a simple, subsistence lifestyle. If you can commit your time, travel expenses and a vehicle, then you can help transport food, medicines and other supplies to grateful elders of the reservation.

Palestine Freedom Walk
Saturday, Oct. 10
Utahns for a Just Peace in the Holy Land are organizing a walk for Palestine event. Participants will march from Pioneer Park to SugarHouse Park to raise awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people. Supporters can help raise awareness of the marginalized condition of many Palestinians in the Holy Land and help raise funds for an Internet education campaign. Registration for the walk is $20 and comes with a free shirt.

Freedom of the Press: At What Cost?
Saturday, October 10
Freedom ain’t free, we’re told, and it seems the same could be said about the free press. Especially with many journalists finding themselves sacrificing more and more to get the story—sometimes even their freedom. This event will feature National Public Radio senior news analyst Daniel Schorr as well as Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, who was imprisoned for four months in Iran for alleged espionage. Saberi was released in May 2009 and is now speaking of the dangers inherent in independent journalism in our day and age. The event is free and open to the public.
