Gone Too Soon
I was bummed out to learn that Spoony & Nata’s Down Home Cuisine has closed for public dining. At this time the restaurant is offering only private catering, specializing in New Orleans-style cuisine and Southern Louisiana soul food.
Pita @ Pepper’s
In my recent “Hand to Mouth” article about good sandwiches and such, I mindlessly left out Pepper’s (14 W. Broadway)—formerly New York Subs—where you can get terrific sandwiches served in pita pockets, along with excellent salads. I highly recommend the Tuscan chicken sandwich; the oven-baked meatball (yum-o!) and the tuna melt “panini.” There’s a great Walnut Grove salad with apples, candied walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, bacon bits and tomatoes on mixed greens. And, how could you pass up the opportunity to order a “Tiger Woody” salad? The curried chicken salad and sandwich are also delicious. Plus, there’s no surcharge for the neighborly service. Check out the menu at PeppersPita.com.
