Posted // May 14,2013 Last night, Park City Live concertgoers experienced the definition of an electrifying rock show, as Ra Ra Riot and The Shins set the bar for summer concerts to come.
Posted // May 8,2013 The Twilight Concert Series has been announced and the news is: same venue, same admission price, a two-day "festival" and an overall better lineup.
Posted // May 8,2013 Here are the tunes to complement our live-music selections for the week of April 11. Have a listen.
Posted // May 7,2013 Now that Salt Lake City has survived the awesome onslaught of local music during the CWMAs, we can look outward to see what the rest of the country is doing. And there's an eclectic batch of albums to dig on this week.
Posted // May 1,2013 Congratulations to Kyle Erickson, aka DJ Flash & Flare, for earning the title of City Weekly's 2013 DJ of the Year. For those of you who couldn't make it out to Zest Kitchen and Bar for the April 17 CWMA DJ Spin-off (or were too drunk to remember), here's your chance to relive the evening in all its glory, or at least 30 minutes of it.
Posted // April 29,2013 The City Weekly Music Awards are for lovers. Maybe that's not exactly always the case, and yet, for one night, lovers made the CWMAs home. Saturday-night's gig at The State Room, the final night of the two-week local music showcases, also saw three bands that are pushing the limits of folk -- lovely indeed!
Posted // April 29,2013 Where in Utah do you go to enjoy a tight-knit music community -- Google Fiber (soon enough) and the deliciousness that is The Awful Waffle? Yep, you guessed it: Provo. And, as it turns out, if you want to feel your body bopping to some of the best local sounds in a venue that's both grunge and cozy, you make the journey to Muse Music for a City Weekly Music Awards Showcase.
Posted // April 27,2013 I’d describe the City Weekly Music Awards showcase at The Urban Lounge on Friday night like this: It was like the audience all hopped in a van together and embarked on a wild journey, starting out on a sunny beach then climbing a candy-coated-cupcake mountain, but ending up crashed in a zombie-filled swamp.
Posted // April 26,2013 Some City Weekly Music Awards showcases are a cohesively arranged array of local flavors designed to appeal to a particular musical palate. Others, like last night’s show at The Complex, are the culinary equivalent of shoving an entire fistful of jellybeans in your mouth with gleeful abandon: safely daring, a little unpredictable and sweetly surprising.
Posted // April 26,2013 The City Weekly Music Awards has entered its second weekend and that means two things: There are three more amazing showcases of local music to behold. And the Band of the Year will be announced soon!
Posted // April 22,2013 “This is either the CWMAs or a Portlandia episode,” City Weekly web editor Bill Frost Tweeted upon entering The Woodshed Saturday night. The most eclectic showcase of our two-week local-music series was certainly weird -- in all the right ways.
Posted // April 22,2013 Three bands walk into a bar, one named The Bully, one named Folk Hogan, the other named Lady Murasaki … sounds like the setup to a bad joke or something you’d pay to watch on the Internet, right? Nope, it was just another stellar night of local music.
Posted // April 22,2013 Summer plans just got a lot better. Bob Dylan will bring his AmericanaramA Festival of Music, with Wilco and My Morning Jacket, to the Usana Amphitheatre on August 1.
Posted // April 19,2013 Thursday night confirmed our assumption that if you put Concise Kilgore, Burnell Washburn and DopeThought all in the same room people will show up.
Posted // April 19,2013 April has been mainly about the online releases and not much happening show-wise until the last minute; kind of a shame, with Record Store Day happening on Saturday, too. So, most of what I'm discussing today is stuff released online or in secret.
Posted // April 18,2013 The St. Regis Big Star, Bright Nights Concert Series will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a solid lineup of seven concerts, a diverse lineup to suit the musical needs of almost anyone.
Posted // April 18,2013 There are three things required to make a Bon Jovi concert successful. “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.” Wednesday night’s show at Energy Solutions Arena hit all three, pleasing the loud and boisterous crowd.
Posted // April 17,2013 On the first Friday of each month May through October, crowds full of professionals, kids and BYU students gather to enjoy a night of stars and song, provided by The Provo Rooftop Concert Series.
Posted // April 17,2013 Here are the tunes to complement our live music selections for the week of April 18--with an emphasis on the City Weekly Music Awards. Have a listen.
