The very first (more to come) Utah Freebirds World Burrito location is now open in Taylorsville at 5419 S. Redwood Road. The customizable-burrito specialists raised and donated money during the first two days of operation to Intermountain Therapy Animals and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Salt Lake. Sweets Chefs on the Move
Have you ever been to the opulent Sunday brunch at The Grand America Hotel and wondered who creates all those sensational desserts? Well, now, the answer is Alexandre Henocq, the new executive pastry chef at The Grand. Henocq hails originally from Givet, France, and most recently headed up the pastry operations at Las Vegas’ Luxor and Excalibur Resort & Casino, serving eight restaurants, two buffets, banquets and a couple of wedding chapels. Sounds like Utah will suit Henocq well, since he loves nature, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing and family time. Meanwhile, I was both saddened (because I’ll miss her) and gladdened (she’s earned some “me” time) to hear of Letty Flatt’s recent retirement. Letty had worked at Deer Valley Resort since its opening in 1981, first as a ski patroller and eventually as longtime executive pastry chef. She is the author of Chocolate Snowball: And Other Fabulous Pastries From Deer Valley Bakery. Happy trails, Letty!

Firehouse Helps
Fire Authority Kudos to Firehouse Subs for recently donating nine sets of outer protective clothing, worth more than $21,000, to the Unified Fire Authority of Great Salt Lake. The gear was donated at the Midvale Firehouse Subs location (1008 E. Fort Union Blvd.) via the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, “a nonprofit with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities to first-responders and public-safety organizations.” According to a Firehouse Subs media representative, customers who purchase $1 or $5 medallions at Firehouse Subs restaurants during October’s Public Safety Month will be contributing to the foundation and will get a free nine-volt battery—perfect for refreshing home smoke detectors.
