Photographer James Huckenpahler has shown his work at House Gallery in the past. His sometimes grainy, sometimes digitally overworked prints have fit in well with the gallery’s designs on filling a niche of being Salt Lake City’s home for abstract artworks. Though photography might seem to be the very domain of objectivity, Huckenpahler’s abstract works prompt the question, “Yes, but what is it?”
The Washington, D.C.,-based artist’s new show, Feature Length Painting, is a little different, for both him and the gallery. Chronicling a feature-length film Huckenpahler recently finished, it’s embedded with an odd narrative—told abstractly and obtusely, but told, nonetheless—alluding to the possibilities for progress at this late date and what has become of faith and nature, conveyed with a bit of irreverence. But then, from an artist residing in the nation’s capital, we’d expect some of that. (Brian Staker)
