Amy Kalafa: Lunch Wars

A desire to expose the deficiencies of public-school lunches and overall food culture inspired Amy Kalafa to co-create the 2007 documentary Two Angry Moms. But, realizing that those who might be inspired by the movie could use additional help in firing up their own activism, Kalafa decided to put together a very practical handbook.

The result, Lunch Wars, only begins with the alarming facts and statistics about what our children are fed at school. More significantly, it provides nuts-and-bolts information for anyone determined to make things better in their own communities. And it’s a remarkably pragmatic guide that is filled with success-story case studies but is also careful to note the many potential frustrations and stumbling blocks in dealing with federal, state and school-district bureaucracies. Few resources for grass-roots action have been as honest about the challenges—and as effective at pointing out how important the work still is of building a culture of wellness in our schools.
