Many Utahns rarely take an opportunity to appreciate the unique natural beauty of Antelope Island. Every Labor Day weekend is a convenient excuse, then, for a visit that adds plenty of entertainment for a weekend stay-cation. The variety of events provides opportunities for both active and spectator fun. The traditional balloon launch (weather permitting) fills the air with color, as do the daily kite demos; Saturday and Sunday also bring BMX demos. If you prefer to get involved, consider a bird walk, a Fielding Garr Ranch horse ride across the plains in search of bison and antelope (reservation required), or a chance to get your face dirty in the pie-eating contest. Each evening finishes with a beachside concert—featuring headliners including Beach Boys tribute band Kahuna Beach Party and The Diamond Experience—and fireworks. Partake of the numerous vendors, as well, but remember to bring cash; part of the price you pay for natural beauty is no convenient ATMs. (Scott Renshaw)
