Locals Only Gallery: Jared Clark

The Locals Only Gallery is the Salt Lake Art Center’s newest exhibition, and Salt Lake City artist Jared Clark has been selected for the inaugural show. The Virginia Commonwealth University graduate will exhibit a new piece from his Bild series of site-specific sculptural works using found materials.

The German word for a painting, “bild” is also a homophone for “build.” Clark’s installation is composed of a flat, rectangular side that infers interpretation as a painting, while the back protrudes in three dimensions, challenging the plane of the painted surface. Comprised of urban and domestic objects, the work manages to maintain a formal minimalism rather than appearing cluttered.

It’s a challenging opener for a gallery intending to not only showcase local artists as part of the contemporary art world, but to also demonstrate how progressive Utah artists can be. Submissions for Round 2 of the Locals Only Gallery are due Oct. 14. (Brian Staker)
