It isn’t as elephantine and all-encompassing as the Salt Lake City-based festival, although it does have national artists, selected by jury, that the Sunday market does not. This year, 225 artists—chosen from 1,000 applicants—will exhibit saleable pieces in various mediums and styles, from fiber to photography and craft to abstract. “You’re not going to get the same thing year after year because our judges, who change yearly, have wide-ranging considerations,” executive director Robin Marrouche says. “Some demographics [attendees and art collectors] are happier one year than another.”
Even after 42 years, the festival continually tries new things. This year, organizers developed RELEVANT, a mentor-artist program in its second year. These collaborative efforts will be auctioned at the Thursday-night gala and displayed at the Kimball Art Center.
The focus is on visual art, but other components—like kids’ art, music and food—add to the experience. Main Street’s restaurants will offer culinary excellence at a discounted price for Taste of Art. The Festival After Dark runs all weekend; on Saturday alone, you’ll find Broadway Rocks! at the Deer Valley Music Festival, chanting Tibetan Monks at the Eccles Center and bluegrass band the Infamous Stringdusters at Canyons Resort. Three days might hardly be enough time to take it all in. (Austen Diamond)
