Black Francis

For many music geeks of a certain age, Black Francis is as significant a figure as they come. As leader of alt-rock pioneers The Pixies, the bulbous, bald singer/guitarist created some of the best, and most influential, music of the ‘80s and ‘90s on albums like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. When he split to go solo, the great tunes just kept on coming on a series of albums that showed Black Francis in interested in more than simply great rock & roll; his sets like Honeycomb had him exploring roots music and Memphis soul. This fall, he has an album coming out that he collaborated on with songwriter Reid Paley, but before that he’s doing just nine solo, acoustic dates, with set lists that will span his career. He did a solo acoustic show at The Urban Lounge a few years back, and it was awesome. I expect this one will be, too. The State Room, 638 S. State, 9 p.m., $20
