Triple-A All-Star Week

Salt Lake City will become known nationwide as a baseball town—well, for a few days, anyway—when the Bees and Spring Mobile Ballpark play host to the 2011 Triple-A All-Star Game..

Four events will lead up to the July 13 game. The All-Star festivities kick off on Saturday, July 9, when Chris Isaak plays at the ball field with Blues Traveler as warm-up act. Isaak, the rare rocker to star in a cable TV show that was not a reality show, will play his signature music that spans more than 25 years..

Monday, July 11, will bring the Triple-A Home Run Derby. Home-run derbies generally aren’t as much fun as they used to be, now that athletes are tested for performance-enhancing drugs, but it’s still an opportunity to see future MLB sluggers hit in our thin mountain air, followed by a fireworks show after dark..

While most of the events require a ticket, there’s no cost on Tuesday, July 12, between noon and 5 p.m., to drop by the park to watch the teams practice and attend autograph sessions. Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew will be on hand for an All-Star luncheon at EnergySolutions Arena on Wednesday, July 13, at 11:30 a.m., with tickets available to the general public..

Finally, the game itself on Wednesday, July 13, pits the best of the Pacific Coast League against the best of the International League in Salt Lake City’s own ballpark, noted for its beautiful views of the Wasatch Mountains. (Geoff Griffin).
