No doubt some of you have had this type of experience: You go check out a band based on something you read or a friend’s recommendation, and find yourself instantly and utterly transfixed. So it was for me a few years back when The Avett Brothers played The Depot. You can try and lump them under the “bluegrass” or “roots-rock” labels, but The Avett Brothers are hard to pin down stylistically. Yes, they’re playing mostly acoustic instruments, but sometimes you can mosh to them. And yes, they jam, but they’re not a jam-band per se. Their Rick Rubin-produced major-label debut I and Love and You garnered them a larger audience, but they remain a bit of a cult sensation, albeit one with increasing hype. Most simply, The Avett Brothers are one of the best live acts out there, and worth every penny of this somewhat pricey show, especially considering that up-and-coming country/blues chanteuse Jessica Lea Mayfield opens the show.
