Matt Flinner Trio

Matt Flinner is one of those freaky-talented guys, seemingly capable of picking up any stringed instrument and making it do marvelous things. As a kid, he was a bit of a banjo prodigy, and he won the National Banjo Competition in Kansas in 1990. The very next year, he won the mandolin version of that contest. The Utah native is widely regarded as one of the most creative mandolin players on the acoustic music scene, whether he’s leading his own trio or playing with the likes of Tony Furtado or Jerry Douglas in various bluegrass-oriented combos. Flinner is playing the first show of the Ogden Nature Center’s summer concert series, which continues August 4 with Bearfoot. Bring a low-back chair, a picnic and the beverage of your choice for the show that will go, rain or shine. Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., Ogden, 7 p.m., $17 adults and $10 for kids 12 and under
