For a long time after Cake burst onto the music scene in the mid-‘90s, I lumped the Sacramento crew in the same category as Weird Al Yankovic, with their joke-y songs like “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” “Italian Leather Sofa” and “Mustache Man (Wasted),” and a full quiver of cover songs at their disposal, from Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” Long after forgetting about the band, they returned this winter with a new album, Showroom of Compassion, that landed at No. 1 on the Billboard sales chart. The sound remains the same, full of squeaking keyboards, mariachi horns and John McCrea’s deadpan vocal stylings, but somehow Cake doesn’t sound as hokey as they did 15 years ago. Or maybe I just have more patience for hokey. A year after selling out the Utah Arts Festival’s Summer Solstice Concert, they’re back for another headlining gig.
