Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus

Critics and fans have been grasping for superlatives to describe Okkervil River leader Will Sheff’s songwriting prowess at least since 2005 album Black Sheep Boy. Each progressive release from Sheff and his gathered instrumental minions seemd a monster-sized leap forward, while staying grounded in folk and indie-rock. Okkervil River’s latest, I Am Very Far, once again ups the ante, with Sheff producing the album himself, creating an incredibly ambitious set of songs. The lyrics beg for repeated listenings to glean some of Sheff’s wisdom, and the music incorporates strings and horns along with recorded noises like a rewinding cassette tape or a tug on a roll of duct tape. Joining Okkervil River on this tour is the no-less-ambitious Titus Andronicus, the New Jersey rockers whose excellent album The Monitor is part Pogues-style pub anthems, part Civil War-inspired antique folks songs and all excellent.
