New Works Theatre Machine: Ride Me

New Works Theatre Machine: Ride Me The inaugural production of experimental theatre company New Works Theatre Machine, Go to Hell—loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice—was shut down by the fire marshal before I had a chance to see it in all its glory. You know, because of the Salt Lake City government’s commitment to creating a new image for the city as a hip cosmopolitan metropolis with nightlife and stuff. Anyway, the early rehearsal I did see gave me a glimpse of what NWTM is trying to do with edgy, accessible material augmented with multimedia whiz-bangery. Which is why I’m looking forward to its new show, Ride Me: A Play With Cruel Intentions. This one is loosely based on the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by way of the 1990s cult schlock adaptation Cruel Intentions featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar. That’s a lot of post-whatever meta-something, and it sounds like sexy, sexy fun. (Rob Tennant)
