Brett Dennen, The Submarines

Singer/songwriter Brett Dennen’s new album, Loverboy, is his fourth chronologically speaking, but he’s looking at it as if it’s his first, offering a fresh start to an artist who’s already had a career’s worth of ups and downs despite his youth. His previous albums led to collaborations with the diverse likes of Femi Kuti, Natalie Merchant and the John Butler Trio, among others, but Dennen always felt like he was trying to prove himself and his talents. Upon Loverboy’s release, though, he said, “On my previous albums, I said what I needed to say. I evoked every different mood and sentiment and emotion. Now I don’t really have anything to prove. I’ve been the new kid on the block and now that phase is over.” The resulting songs on Loverboy showcase a musician comfortable in his own skin and sounding better than ever.
