Repertory Dance Theatre: 45 Years, 45 Dances

Linda Smith, artistic director of Repertory Dance Theatre, says that if they were to do an inventory of the entire repertory of the company’s 45-year history, they’d find more than 370 works by 136 different choreographers stored neatly in their closet. That’s not to say they could reproduce and perform any given one of those pieces at the drop of a hat, but in the epic performance event 45 Years, 45 Dances, they’ll exhibit a diverse sampling of those historic modern dance works. The 12-hour event is scheduled to include live performances of the best of the best, interspersed with informal panel discussions and screenings of rarely seen archival video footage. “We have lots of works in our repertory, and in the dancer’s bodies, they hold a lot of kinesthetic memory,” says Smith. “Some of our dancers have been in the company for 15 years, and that’s a lot of information to have ready and able to perform. Also, this event is designed to be an open house, so that the community can come get to know us for five minutes, an hour or the entire day.” Although the performance portion of the event is free, ultimately, it’s designed as a fundraiser, too—an invitation to individuals to become Sapphire Club members by donating $45, a dollar for every year of RDT’s illustrious run. At the end of the 12-hour marathon, those who helped fill this cherished nonprofit’s coffers will be invited to an after-hours celebratory soiree.
