Art is often a vehicle for its creators to work through the trials and tragedies that shaped their lives and perspectives. For the team of Elaine Jarvik—the veteran local journalist whose The Coming Ice Age premiered at Salt Lake Acting Company in 2010—and her visual artist/writer daughter Kate Jarvik Birch, a shared experience led to a comic play about a very personal subject.
The protagonist, Rosie, is a 30-something woman who has spent the past 20 years wondering about her father, a famed scientist who remarried and distanced himself from his previous family. In an effort to draw her father back into her life, Rosie plans a birthday party for her grandmother, hoping for an appearance by the enigmatic figure. Deena Marie Manzanares, Joyce Cohen and Jesse Peery lead a terrific cast in a story about confronting abandonment and making peace with someone who isn’t even there. (Scott Renshaw)
