Critics contort themselves into some strange comparisons in trying to describe the sound of Junip. NPR likened the songs of Jose Gonzalez and Co. as a mix of “repetitive trance Ethiopian music,” German electronica and the smoky jazz of Nina Simone. Others add “Afrobeat,” “krautrock” and “chillwave” to the mix. Gonzalez’s songs are all that and then some, with the Swede/Argentine’s voice often floating along in a barely audible mist of those sounds. Seeing Junip pull of its multicultural music live should be a treat. Acrylics open the show. Friday 4.29 @ The State Room, 638 S. State, 9 p.m., $20 advance/$25 day of show
