Phosphorescent

I took one look at the title of the first song on Phosphorescent’s Here’s to Taking it Easy album and audibly groaned: “It’s Hard to Be Humble (When You’re From Alabama).” Then the horns started blasting, the easy acoustic grooves kicked in and Matthew Houck’s distinct, warm twang burst through to make me rethink my anti-Alabama bias (it helps that ‘bama native Houck is now living in Brooklyn). The album landed on several 2010 “Best Of” lists, from Britain’s MOJO to America’s Paste Magazine, and Houck is taking his show on the road all over the states this spring, including stops at Coachella and Bonnaroo after this Salt Lake City stop.
