Portland-based roots troubador Fernando Viciconte, who performs simply as Fernando, had essentially given up music after releasing True Instigator as a farewell of sorts. Then R.E.M.’s Peter Buck cornered him in a Portland bar and basically insisted on Fernando getting back in the game, offering to play guitar on his next album. Duly inspired, Fernando landed a deal to turn the digital-only True Instigator into a national release, and he’s on the road supporting it until he and Buck have time to get together later this year.
