Obviously the iconic frontman John Popper of Blues Traveler is the familiar face in this brand new band, but the group is far from a Popper solo project; it’s actually a visit back to Popper’s pre-Blues Traveler days playing in New York City clubs. Popper and guitarist/producer Jono Mansen have a musical relationship that goes back nearly 30 years, and they decided to hole up in a New Mexico mountain studio and write and record. The resulting self-titled album hit stores on March 1, and it’s more rocking and less jammy than Popper’s more-famous band, while still showcasing Popper’s fiery harmonica blasts and surprisingly supple croon.
