Blame him or thank him: Without Z-Trip, we would not have the likes of Girltalk or any number of mash-up DJs. Z-Trip is the godfather of the style, and he blew my mind at Coachella in 2002, turning his tent into a frenzied dance party and closing it down with a surprise appearance by Beck, who tried to rap along with Z-Trip’s rapid fire twists and turns, to little effect. In the years since, Z-Trip has toured the globe, released major-label albums and, in 2009, winning the “America’s Best DJ” poll in DJ Times.
