The appeal of experimental New York popsters Freelance Whales comes from its blend of traditional rock instrumentation—ye olde guitar-bass-drums—with the less traditional: banjo, glockenspiel, harmonium, along with plenty of electronic buzzes, bleeps and beeps. The band’s debut, Weathervanes, makes fine use of their kitchen-sink aesthetic in telling the story of a young boy who falls in love with a female ghost haunting his house. One-man-gang Zach Tillman, a.k.a. Pearly Gate Music, opens what should be an engaging show.
