Kendrick Lamar

On his major-label debut, good kid, m.a.a.d. city (Oct. 12, 2012, Aftermath/Interscope), Compton, Calif.-based hip-hop wordsmith Kendrick Lamar masterfully weaves together vignettes, tight hooks and sound samples of his friends and family to create a highly personal love letter to his gang-blighted home turf. Featuring contributions from several fellow Compton rappers—including the album’s executive producer, Dr. Dre—the 13 narrative tracks touch on spirituality and rising above a negative environment. Check out “Compton,” a mature, return-to-roots anthem that proves good kid, m.a.a.d. city is worthy of the national hype it’s gotten in the wake of the success of lead single “Swimming Pools (Drank).” SchoolboyQ, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and Kid Ink are also on the bill.
