Also in Indie/Alt

During Akron/Family’s near-10-year career, the band has never achieved the success that other indie outfits (from a period when “indie” was new and meant something) like Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear have, but that’s part of the appeal of this three-piece. Owing as much to the Bay Area vibes of Grateful Dead as to the experimental bravado of Beck, Akron/Family has been allowed to push boundaries unpredictably to gain a dedicated cult following, who has reveled in the band’s seven albums. Label Akron/Family what you like—freak folk, cosmic rock, experimental indie—but the band’s sound is hard to pin down, and their latest album, Sub Verses, carries on their wild traditions and also cranks up the volume a bit. With a swirling, beautiful mess of churning, metal-influenced riffage, ecstatic percussion and restrained, shockingly gorgeous soundscapes, it’s an album that’s as intense as it is intimate. Avi Buffalo and M Geddes Gengras will open the show.
