Jim Norton

Please Be Offended is the title of Jim Norton’s latest comedy special—and the theme of his entire career. You might say nothing is sacred to the actor and comedian, and it would be truer of him than any other comedian. Not even Sam Kinison or Bill Hicks could match Norton’s scorched-earth worldview and ostensible self-loathing. You may know him best from the Opie & Anthony Show, or as “Rich” from Louis C.K.’s much-loved, canceled-too-soon HBO sitcom Lucky Louie. On Opie, misanthropic Norton regularly harangues guests, pointing out their stupidity in the rawest terms with maximum derision. On Louie, Norton’s character sold weed to children and espoused a slew of principles that were just plain wrong. But that’s how he is in real life. His autobiographical Happy Endings: The Tales of a Meaty-Breasted Zilch (Gallery Books) details the many humiliating things he does to himself—or pays others to do to him. It’s thoroughly shocking, but ultimately one of the most honest expressions to come from a comedian. Let’s face it, folks: We know a lot of the “this happened to me” stories that comics tell onstage are simply premises formed from ideas and observations. But Jim Norton tells exactly what happens to him and, while it’s weird verging on über-freaky, you can actually see truth about yourself in his anecdotes. Which is scary, but a testament to the man’s talent. His latest CD, No Baby for You ( is out now. Buy it before the show if you need a heads-up. Or don’t, and be brutally (but pleasantly) surprised.
