Tandy Beal & Company: HereAfterHear

Tandy Beal & Company have spent the past 40 years producing theater rooted in dance that pushes boundaries while tackling big questions. With a no-limitations creative ethic at heart, it’s no wonder that Frank Zappa, Carl Sagan, Bobby McFerrin, Tim Burton and even the Moscow Circus have turned to Beal for collaboration. Beal’s new multimedia work, HereAfterHere: a self-guided tour of eternity, combines a little bit of everything in the choreographer’s bag—including longtime partner/collaborator Jon Scoville’s compositions, video projections, professional local dancers and several actors from Beal’s other home state of California. The evening-length piece explores how our culture deals with death—or rather doesn’t deal with it. Alongside the actual performances, there will be panel discussions slated to tackle these issues, benefit auctions for Hospice for Utah, and screenings and discussions of several other related films. The point of the production is to shift the whole cultural sphere around death and dying, in order to change its taboo status. (Jacob Stringer)
