Utopia Early Music: The Morning Trumpet

The lineage of musical styles is sometimes self-evident; in other cases, the bloodlines are tangled. And sometimes it’s hard to believe the influences that inspired certain styles. Utopia Early Music closes its fourth season with a fascinating evening tracing the way American folk music like the kind associated with the Appalachians drew its inspiration from tunes hundreds of years older, born in medieval England and France. Folk duo Otter Creek joins singers Emily Nelson, Christopher LeCluyse and Valerie Hart-Nelson along with musicians Mary Danzig, Peter Danzig and Ricky Parkinson to juxtapose the earthy songs of the American frontier with their European cousins. The music of early American composer William Billings and 18th-century ballads share the bill with gospel and monastic chants. It’s amazing what you can discover when you start a little genealogical research. (Scott Renshaw)
