The Hive Theatre Company: A Behanding in Spokane

Film lovers have gotten a taste for the darkly comic sensibility of Martin McDonagh in his violent, funny thrillers In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. But they may be less familiar with his work as an award-winning playwright—including Tony Award nominations for The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Pillowman —before finding big-screen success.

McDonagh’s 2010 play A Behanding in Spokane marked the Irish writer’s first story set in America, with Christopher Walken (who later starred in Seven Psychopaths) originating the role of a professional killer named Carmichael continuing a 27-year quest. As a youth, one of his hands was cut off by thugs, and Carmichael won’t rest until he recovers it. Is it possible that the quarrelling couple offering a severed hand for sale have what Carmichael has been looking for? The journey toward the answer may be as hilarious as it is brutal.
