Frei is a master of skillfully rendered figure studies in oil, especially contours and shading of clothing; a painting of a wedding dress on a hanger is a highlight of the show. Call’s works here eschew street art for impressive figure paintings, naturally depicted but with broken edges, as though viewed on an aging VHS tape. Those details heighten the paintings’ sense of narrative. James’ landscapes are stylish as well as accomplished; their adaptability as interior décor detracts nothing from their artistic vitality.
University of Utah professor Sam Wilson is the “odd artist out” in this show, as his carnival-like scenarios diverge from the realism of the other artists. The quartet’s work came together as an assemblage of some of Utah’s most elevated practitioners to touch brush to canvas. (Brian Staker)
