Salt Lake Poetry Slam

SEven though the world of poetry slams has its share of female poets, sometimes it’s hard to make out their voices from the general din of this sometimes noisy, frenetic literary genre. The Women of the World Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas, spotlights female voices, but, of course, there is a rigorous competition to make it to that venue. At tonight’s event, local slam-poetry organization Salt City Slam will select which poet out of 10 entrants will go on to compete in Austin in 2014. In addition to the playoff, during which judges will award numerical scores, Portland, Ore.-based performance poet Meg Waldron will open the evening on the lighter side. She has made it to the finals in several National Poetry Slams, as well as the finals of this year’s Women of the World Poetry Slam in March, in which several locals also made it to the finals. The evening also marks the move for the Salt Lake City group to a new home at Weller Book Works. (Brian Staker)
