Stornoway, Horse Thief

Tales From Terra Firma is “an album of stories about rites of passage,” says Stornoway’s singer and principal songwriter, Brian Briggs. These stories are personal—mirroring Briggs’ and his bandmates’ experiences as they’ve settled into a life outside of college, found and lost love and come to their music-career crossroads. The story/songs also contemplate birth, death, family, nature, joy and pain, and are inspired by disparate influences: some of the century’s greatest musicians, like Tom Waits and David Gilmour, and 19th-century poets John Clare and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The high tide of melodies and thoughtful arrangements found in this nine-song sophomore release will please fans of The Decemberists, Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers, but the most striking thing about this British four-piece, however, isn’t the intricate sonic textures or provocative lyrics—it’s that they’ve made a simply great pop record. Horse Thief opens the show. $10
