The Black Angels

The now-four-piece Texas-based The Black Angels haven’t strayed far from the 2010 release Phosphene Dream on their latest effort. Indigo Meadow sees the psych-rock revivalists doing the fuzzed-out guitar licks and reverbed—if not kinda spooky—singing again on songs that are more straight-up garage rock than their early works, which owe more to late ’60s psychedelia. On Indigo Meadow, they even dip into “message” songs with an agenda, like “Don’t Play With Guns” and “Broken Soldier.” It’s not The Black Angels at their best, but in concert, with the new material peppered in among the band’s first two albums—classics in the neo-psych canon—it should be pretty spectacular.
