Hale Centre Theatre: No Time for Sergeants

War is hell—of that there is no doubt. Yet, stories about the armed forces have often looked for the humor, whether sincere or satirical, in the unique dynamic of men from every possible background being thrown together in a world with little patience for unique personalities.

World War II veteran Mac Hyman created one of those personalities in his 1954 novel No Time for Sergeants, which told the story of a good-natured, good-hearted but somewhat na´ve Georgia farm boy named Will Stockdale as he’s drafted into the U.S. Army’s Air Forces. His sincerity unnerves Stockdale’s basic-training commander, Sgt. Orville King, who doesn’t quite know what to do with someone as sincere as Stockdale. But when Stockdale inadvertently gets King in trouble with his own superior officer, it’s left to King to make sure Stockdale passes every one of the tests that will get him classified for active duty.
