Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Malitia Malimob

“We use the album as the station that we leave from for the live performance,” said Ishmael Butler (aka Palaceer Lazaro), the rhyming half of Seattle’s Shabazz Palaces, in an interview on Pitchfork.tv’s +1 in 2012. “There’s a few secret weapons that’s in the live performance that’s not in the album.” The critically acclaimed 2011 release Black Up, with its lyrics a smattering of vignettes written seemingly as stream of consciousness and industrial, minimalistic beats produced with Tendai “Baba” Maraire, is a pretty solid station. The duo has also been in the studio readying a follow-up album, when they aren’t remixing songs by The Helio Sequence or participating in art projects like Mw [Moment Magnitude], an ongoing multimedia exhibition series at Seattle’s Frye Art Museum. Shabazz Palaces’ UFO of free-form artistry is flying all over the post-hip-hop stratosphere. Sub Pop labelmates THEEsatisfaction and also Malitia Malimob provide support. $12
