Dark Horse Company Theatre: Reefer Madness: The Musical

When Park City’s Dark Horse Company Theatre originally staged the satirical musical version of Reefer Madness in 2010, our Brandon Burt’s review said that it “does not slyly lampoon or subtly caricature the hypocrisy of a media-driven fear-based culture; it blows the top right off it, joyfully tears it to shreds, and sweeps up the audience in a divinely decadent whirlwind of iconoclasm.” So, why not bring it back to delight audiences again (albeit with a brand-new cast)?

Based on the infamous 1936 cautionary film, Reefer Madness: The Musical follows the story of two innocent, young teenage lovebirds—Jimmy and Mary—whose wholesome lives are thrown into turmoil when they wander into a marijuana den, and find themselves drawn to the seductive weed. Can they escape its clutches? You can only find out through the parade of terrific tunes like “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy” whether there’s a happy ending for Jimmy and Mary—and a happier ending for the audience. (Scott Renshaw)
