He's My Brother, She's My Sister

Band photos with folks exuding a hipster-cool chic while posed against a brick wall at sunset are a dime a dozen. It takes a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously to pose while all five members brush their teeth. Plus, hygiene is important when you’re performing 150-plus shows a year (opening for Neko Case, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Local Natives, Dawes and My Morning Jacket). The band, led by brother and sister Robert and Rachel Kolar, evokes a collective spirit, a particular style of gypsy Americana—in song and press photos. Robert’s vocals (dry and wry) alternative with Rachel’s (sweet and earnest) and are held aloft by a soundscape unique to the band: created by a tap-dancing percussionist. The band’s debut, Nobody Dances in This Town, includes tunes—like “Tales That I Tell”—that simultaneously get under your skin and make for catchy earworm appeal. $15
