Salt Lake Acting Company: The Exit Interview

For those who have experienced it, the world of academia certainly seems filled with absurdities. William Missouri Downs’ world-premiere new play takes that notion and launches it into a world of absurdist comedy.

The setup finds university professor Dick Fig (Darrin Doman) recently terminated from his position. Like many individuals leaving a job, Fig participates in an exit interview—in his case, with an administrator named Eunice (Nell Gwynn). But few exit interviews take the surreal turns that this one does, as Eunice’s questions dig into Fig’s views on the Big Issues: love, death, religion and more. And those views come to life as living manifestations of those ideas stroll through the story, providing a wild stream-of-consciousness ride.

Downs may be a veteran of writing for ’80s and ’90s sitcoms like My Two Dads and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but if you think that’s the brand of humor you can expect, Fig has a few things to teach you. (Scott Renshaw)
