Purity Ring, Blue Hawaii

It takes true skill, finesse and a bit of brazen showmanship to take a fairly awful mainstream song—Soulja Boy and Ester Dean’s “Grammy”—and turn it into something more than interesting and ready for repeat listens. Well, the Halifax/Montreal-based duo Purity Rings (Corin Roddick and Megan James) weave together the hooks of ’90s R&B, the bass-intensive pay-attention-to-me-now aspects of hip-hop and make it all their own in an ethereal dream-pop package, as heard on their debut, Shrines (4AD). James’ clear, distinct voice gets chopped and diced over a synth-sound playground that can twist and turn, then wind right back up to become hooks in straightforward earworms, like “Grammy.” Blue Hawaii starts things off. $13 in advance, $15 day of show
