The duo of Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Pinsky landed somewhere in the messy middle of that wide-ranging spectrum with the long-running show Loveline. During their 10-year hosting stint, from 1995 to 2005, the pair answered some of the oddest quasi-medical questions ever, handling delicate and oftentimes perverse issues with a combination of frat-bro humor (regularly doled out by Carolla) and practical advice patiently and sometimes sternly delivered by the far more level-headed Dr. Drew.
While these two admittedly make rather odd comedy-advice bedfellows—for instance, one has hosted a television hit appropriately titled The Man Show; the other has hosted several celebrity-rehab reality shows—both are New York Times best-selling authors. The titles of their books alone can tell you a bit about the dueling personalities that ultimately made their partnership work. For instance, Dr. Drew has penned such heady works as The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America and Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again. Funnyman Carolla, meanwhile, has authored such seminal titles as In 50 Years We’ll All Be Chicks and 2012’s not-to-be-missed Not Taco Bell Material. (Jacob Stringer) $30-$50
