Toubab Krewe, Holy Water Buffalo

Toubab Krewe is an Asheville, N.C.-based five-piece band interested in transnational musical syncretism—how to meld the music stylings of Mali and West Africa with that of their homeland. Toubab Krewe (translated as “foreigner crew”) have studied in Africa under prodigy Lamine Soumano and other teachers, and draw upon guitar along with kora (21-string harp-lute), kamelengoni (12-string harp-lute), soku (Malian horsehair fiddle) and various percussive instruments. They play almost entirely in African time signatures, scales and chord structures, but add in tinges of blues and surf music for something completely original. Holy Water Buffalo opens the show. $16
