Merchandise, Parenthetical Girls, Wet Hair

Portland, Ore.-based experimental-pop group Parenthetical Girls started primarily as a recording project of Zac Pennington as he was trying to emulate the musical mood of Brian Eno, Peter Kember and Phil Spector. With the help of Dead Science’s Jherek Bischoff and Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart, Parenthetical Girls released their debut album (((GRRRLS))) in 2004. Nearly a decade later, with Bischoff in the fold, Parenthetical Girls released their fourth album, Privileges (Abridged), in February 2013. The effort showcases simple, unique instrumental arrangements paired with Pennington’s catchy hooks—easily compared to those of The Smiths. Merchandise and Wet Hair are also on the bill. (Thomas Larsen) $8
